DVD Manager v0.0.0.30 Alpha

DVD Manager v0.0.0.30 has arrived.

What’s New?

  • Re-use your old folder rips by ripping to a file from an existing folder rip.
  • If you don’t have a DVD drive inside of your WHS, now you can rip using your client PCs! The DVD Manager client installs much like the add-in for WHS but can run on your client PC and rip the DVD to the same share you set in the add-in’s preferences. Currently there isn’t way to monitor the percent complete but you can run this on as many PCs as you’d like (the log is merged on the server, so you can view that if need be), even ripping at the same time. The client also requires AnyDVD or DVD34 to decrypt the DVD and the Windows Home Server Connector software installed.

Screws Tightened

  • Rips to a video file sometimes had the wrong audio track, that has been fixed in this build.

Upgrade Instructions

  1. Install as you would normally but also add a Windows Firewall Exception for the local subnet on port 9790 TCP.

Client Install Instructions

  1. Install like a normal application.
  2. After install go to Windows Run (Windows Key + R), and type in services.msc
  3. Find DVD Ripper, and double click the list item.
  4. Go to the Logon tab, choose This account, and type in your WHS user name,
  5. Enter the password into the password box.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Restart the DVD Ripper service.
  8. Close Services, and enjoy.

Very nice, My Movies is a little to heavy weight, but this seems alot more to the point.

What would be nice, would be to be able to compress down to a Single sided DVD (4.3Gb) as some DVD's are 8Gb!! Just like with DVDShrink

Dale

I thought I would give this add in a try.

Sadly, since installing the service seems to be constamtly trying to access the A:\ drive, I can also no longer access the Windows Home Server Console due to an people.dll issue.

I will have to fiddle about and remove this application manually as I can not access the add-ins section to remove.

Happy to try this again, if a fix is released.

Matt

What is this add-in trying to do with my floppy drive? why is it constantly attempting to access that for?

Also why am I getting a CLR exception in my event log since installing this add-in?

Dale,

I don't have a PC with a floppy drive so I am unable to see why it is accessing it. The people.dll issue should go away if you have the console try loading it again.

Matt,

It may be accessingthe drive by accident to see if it is a DVD, though it shouldn't be. Did you install the client on the WHS, make sure you installed the Add-In only! DO NOT install the client on your WHS, it will replace two needed files if you do.

Matt

All I added was the WHS Add-in.

Brent Friedman

Matt,

I don't know then. DVD Manager may not be responsible.

partnerinflight

client doesn't install on an x64 system. Getting BadImageFormatException trying to access WHSConsole.dll -- I'm guessing you built targeted to x86? Can you make a processor-neutral build, or are you using native code somewhere?

Brent Friedman

Partnetinflight,

Yes, I didn't notice that untill yesterday as well. I'll post a new installer when I get a new WHS test server up.

isomerize

I'd like to try this out, but after installing the add-in, I can't get the console to restart. I get error messages saying health.dll and people.dll can't load (forgot to get a screenshot, so I'm going off memory). Looks like a problem with creating the DVD Manager tab?

Diehard

I also get the same error as isomerize. Sometimes it's different dll's. Then it might start if I select no and continue, however the add-in will be missing. I believe DVD Manager did install and was visable early on, but then these problem started and I don't see it anymore and have to uninstall.

Myql

I am unable to run this on WHS, I got several errors as mentioned above (HomeServerTab.people.dll (I can't remember the exact name) and .sharing.dll etc). I had to uninstall the power pack 1, rename the offending .dlls (c:\program files\homeserver)

and reinstall the powerpack to get back to square 1.

when I run the client I get an error (Visual Studio 2008 says "{"No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 192.168.0.70:9790"}

The server IP address is the .70 and my client is .68, so this makes some sense.

I am very interested in this type of software (I would love to stream to my XBox360).

I would be happy to test/provide feedback (or even code, I am a decent c# developer) .

Thanks,

Michael

Brent Friedman

Myql,

The client connects to your WHS to share the log and settings. Try following the "Upgrade Instructions" to add a firewall exception.

iclay

I am using this program successfully, ripping to WMV. Are these files DRM protected? I keep trying to sync them with my Zune, but the conversion crashes, stating invalid or corrupt data in the file....

Brent Friedman

Iclay,

There is no DRM protection. Have you tried playing the file to check if it is indeed corrupt or not?

iclay

Yup. All my files seem to play fine. It's just when I try to convert them, they all fail.

A

I get a similar .dll error when trying to open the console after installing:

"The Windows Home Server Console cannot open because the following file is blocking it: HomeServerConsoleTab.DVD_Manager.dll.

Do you want to open the console without this file?

If you click Yes, the console may start without a feature that is associated with this file. If you click No, the console will try to open again, using this file."

Any thoughts? I follow the installation instructions to the letter.

Brent Friedman

A,

Do you have .NET 3.5 SP1 installed on your WHS?

isomerize

okay, it looks like I had initially installed dot NET 3.5 sp1 update (2.8 MB). uninstalled that, then installed the full package (~260 MB) and now everything works. here's a link to the full dot NET 3.5 sp1 installer (http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/0/e/20e90413-712f-438c-988e-fdaa79a8ac3d/dotnetfx35.exe).

usofbillgates

When i try to rip a dvd using anydvd or dvd43, i get an error in the log:

1/25/2009 5:56:26 AM Error Ripping DVD to WMV. Fatal Error while Ripping DVD.

The system cannot find the path specified at System.Diagnostics.Process.StartWithCreateProcess(ProcessStartInfo startInfo)

at System.Diagnostics.Process.Start()

at DVD_Manager.SDK.Core.Ripper.Rip2WMV()

This happens no matter what choices i use in the console.

Brent Friedman

usofbillgates,

Look for C:\Program Files\Windows Home Server\Mencoder\mencoder.exe

If it doesn't exist, check to make sure you installed DVD Manager correctly. Try reinstalling if not.

usofbillgates

I checked for the folders and they are there. I uninstalled and reinstalled the add-in and still get the same error, i have tried with about 30 different dvd's also. each gets the same error.

Brent Friedman

usofbillgates,

That error means that "C:\Program Files\Windows Home Server\Mencoder\mencoder.exe" could not be found. You installed it through the Settings dialog in the WHS Console, right?

magicbob007

When i installed the add in to the WHS there were no errors, but it isnt showing up in the tabs and it doesnt show up in the settings dialogue. The settings-add ins tab says its installed but its no where to be found.

Add/Remove programs says its installed but where is it?

usofbillgates

Yes, i installed it through the home server console.

Brent Friedman

magicbob007,

Did you install .NET 3.5 SP1 on your WHS?

magicbob007

yes. on both the WHS and my client PC.

Brent Friedman

magicbob007,

DId you try reinstalling it? On your WHS check the "C:\Program Files\Windows Home Server" folder for a file named "HomeServerConsoleTab.DVD_Manager.dll". Does it exist?

magicbob007

I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it several times. And when its "intalled" that .dll is there.

usofbillgates

Brent,

i am still getting the same error messages as before, i have uninstalled and reinstalled several times through the console. Ive checked for the mencoder files, and they are there.

scott

Can you add more output types? I would love to use this for viewing videos on my TIVO. I would think FFMPEG could give you all the codecs you need.

scott

Bret - I think the formatting I have figured out. No problem there - but it does not seem to rip the entire file. I did Madagascar as a test and it only ripped the "makeing of" 8 minute clip.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi Brent,

please contact me on my private mail address, please.

Br, Mike

Brent Friedman

Scott,

Sorry I never replied. I'm usually slow to checking my blog for comments. It's good you posted the problem at WeGotServed.

Mike_nl,

I emailed you. I'm not quite sure what you need to take to me about though. In case your spam box catches my message, the Email subject is: "You Rang?"

DieHard
